Big thanks to Charlotte for raising the issue of single-use plastics in our kitchen. After a few emails this practice has now been stopped. A suggestion box is on order to make it easier for our amazing pupils to let us know their ideas for making changes for the better!!

Year 3 Learning Overview - Autumn 2 2017

What are we learning?

Our topic for this half of the term is ‘Gods and Mortals.

As Geographers, we will be exploring Ancient Greece using maps to identify geographical features.  We will also learn how we can plot routes on maps and create a key.

As Designers, we will design a product based on a given criteria.  We will explore the design process through a series of lessons, which will conclude with us making our own sculpture.

As Historians, we will be asking questions about the past and using Greek artefacts to help us find out more about life in Ancient Greece.  We will then start to make connections and explore how some elements of life in Ancient Greece have influenced the western world.

In addition:

In English we will be learning about the legend of Icarus and Daedalus, the Trojan horse and Theseus and the Minotaur.  We will be writing descriptive sentences using adjectives, adverbs, fronted adverbials and thinking about using a wider range of punctuation.

In Maths we will be focusing on the bar model to help us with addition and subtraction word problems. We will also be learning about multiplication and division.

In Computing we will be using algorithms to create our own programmes.

In Mandarin we will be learning the names of countries and how to talk about where we are from.

In Philosophy for Children (P4C) we will focusing on how we listen and respond to other’s viewpoints.

In Music we will learning the violin.

Key information:

Uniform:  Children must be in the correct uniform - grey trousers, skirt, pinafore or shorts; white collared shirt or polo shirt; purple school cardigan or jumper; white or grey socks or grey tights. Girls may also wear a purple and white school dress during the summer months.  All items of clothing must be labelled with their name. Hair longer than shoulder length should be tied back with a purple or black hair band.

P.E. Kit:  Please make sure your children have shorts, a white t-shirt with the school logo, plimsolls and socks in a named P.E. bag in school. Children in Goldcrest class will have P.E on Tuesday and Friday, and children in Nightingale class will have P.E on Wednesday and Friday. P.E kits will be sent home on Friday and should return to school on Monday.

Children are not allowed to do P.E. without the appropriate kit. Please could you check your child’s kit as children have been doing quite a bit of growing over the holidays.

Violin Lessons:  Violin lessons take place on Mondays; children will now be able to take their violins home with them to enable them to practise during the week.  If you would like you child to be able to take their violin home with them, please return the loan request form to the reception.  We recommend that children practise every day for 10 minutes.  Violins will be sent home on a Monday and must come back into school on Friday so that they can be tuned ready for the lesson on Monday.

Reading Books and Reading Records: Please make sure your child’s books and reading records are in their book bags each day. Children should read daily and we ask that you record this in their reading record.

Overview of our home learning: Home learning will be handed out weekly on a Thursday and should be returned to school on a Tuesday.

There will also be one half-termly homework project. This Half Term it is ‘Gods and Mortals’. Home learning projects will be due on Tuesday 12th December 2017.

The home learning project is a way for your child to show off the learning that they have been doing throughout the term, this is an opportunity for children to present their learning in a way that is appropriate to them.

Also….

Helping in the Classroom - We welcome parents to help and support in classrooms, so please contact us if you are interested in contributing to an activity: from listening to readers, DIY or art activities for example.  Please be aware that volunteering places you in a position of trust due to the range of information you have access to about the school community. Therefore you will be required to sign a confidentiality and privacy agreement before helping out in a classroom.  Please contact the school office to complete relevant documentation.

Expectations:

We encourage children to develop character attributes, traits and behaviours that we believe underpin success in school and beyond. We call these the ‘Keys to Success’. These are Determination, Curiosity, Community Spirit, Respect, Integrity, Self-control, Conscientiousness and Responsibility.

In school, we continue to use the rainbow ladder to encourage positive behaviour. In year 3 children have the opportunity to earn recognition for demonstrating the school’s keys to success and will receive a special sticker once they have moved to a key. We encourage you to ask your child why they have received a special sticker and what key to success they followed. Children whose behaviour causes them to be on the thunder cloud will be given a note to take home explaining their behaviour.

Children will attend a celebration assembly every Tuesday morning where two children from each Year 3 class will be awarded a Powerful Learner Certificate in honour of showing one of the above attributes.

Other Events:

It will be Anti-Bullying Week the week beginning 13.11.17. Children will be discussing what bullying is and what they can do if they or others are being bullied.

The week beginning 20.11.17 will be Road Safety Week.  We will be finding out about the risks of the road and what we can do to stay safe as the evenings get darker.

Our Parent celebration will be on the 30.11.17 at 3.30pm. This is another chance for the children to share their learning and projects with you.
