Year 2 Learning Overview - Summer 1 2017

What are we learning?

This half term our Topic Theme is ‘Land Ahoy!’ and our learning in all subjects will be linked to this.

As Scientists, we will be taking advantage of the warmer weather (hopefully!) and will be seeing what it takes for a seed to grow in a plant. We will be carefully watching over our garden box in the playground, too.

As Artists, Designers and Technologists, we will be inspired by Grace Darling and look to create our very own lighthouse. We will explore different structures from over the centuries and see how they have developed. On that note, please send in any junk modelling suitable for making lighthouses. We will be especially after circular tubes and kitchen rolls. We will also be exploring the tempestuous scenes of Turner as well as Hokusai’s – The Wave.

In addition:

In English, we will be using paintings to inspire our creative writing. We will also be exploring the text – Ice Trap that looks at Ernest Shackleton’s treacherous journey.

In Maths, we will be consolidating all of our learning from the year – time, measuring, fractions, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. We will be delving more into mathematical problem solving which will require us to bring together all of our learning.

In Mandarin, we will continue to broaden our vocabulary through songs and games. We are very excited about welcoming our new Mandarin teacher! We will be especially focusing on words that enable us to talk about ourselves. We will also continue to learn how to write in Mandarin.

In Philosophy for Children (P4C), we will continue to develop our thinking skills by asking questions and making assumptions. We will be making choices based on our opinions, and respectfully listening to and responding to others.

In Music, we will continue to practise the recorder and develop our musical skills using percussion instruments. Please ensure your child brings in their recorder every Wednesday.

In RE, we will be learning about Islam. We will be learning about different festivals and worship.

Other Events:

International Day is on the 11th May. This will be a chance for us to learn about each other’s different cultures.

We will be going on a school visit to The Cutty Sark on the 24th May - more details to follow.

Our Parent celebration will be on 26th May at 9am. We will be sharing our learning with you as well as the projects from this half term.

Key information:

Uniform:  Please ensure your child is in the correct uniform and that all items are labelled with their name.

PE Kit: PE is on Wednesday and Friday; please ensure your child’s kit is brought in on Monday and it will be returned to you on Friday to wash at home. Please ensure that each item is labelled with your child’s name.

Reading Books, Records and Targets: Children read daily in school; please make sure your child’s book, reading record (yellow book) and targets are in their bags each day. Please read with your child daily and make a short comment in their reading record.

Overview of our home learning: Home learning is handed out weekly on a Thursday, along with Maths Challenges every other week, and should be returned on a Tuesday. If there are any difficulties with home learning, please see your child’s class teacher.

Thank you for all the wonderful home learning projects we have seen this year. However small, we love sharing them with the class. It has been great to see some children even making them in Early Bloomers. We will collect and share projects on week commencing Monday 22nd May. Our topic this half term is ‘Land Ahoy’, so explorers, shipwrecks, adventurers and far-flung places!
