Year 1 Learning Overview - Autumn 2 2016

What are we learning?

This half term our Topic Theme is ‘Bright Lights, Big City’, and our learning in all subjects will be linked to this.

As Historians we will learning about the Great Fire of London, we will be sequencing events, looking at maps of where it started and discussing how it started.

As Scientists we will be looking at plants; drawing and labelling a plant, naming common plants and learning about deciduous and evergreen trees.

As Artists we will be recreating Pudding Lane using a variety of materials and building Tudor style houses and shops.

In addition:

In English we will be writing captions to match photographs and writing a recount of our visit with the Queen. We will be re-telling the story of the Great Fire of London and writing fact pages. We will also be writing instructions on how to bake bread as Thomas Farriner’s bakery assistant.

In Maths we will be looking at position and direction, using numbers up to 20, sequencing events in chronological order, and learning the days of the week and months of the year.

In Mandarin we will be learning how to introduce ourselves and ask simple questions.

In Philosophy for Children (P4C) we will continue to develop our thinking skills by asking questions and making assumptions. We will be making choices based on our opinions, and respectfully listening to and responding to others.

In Music we will continue to practise the recorder and learn a variety of Christmas songs.

In R.E we will be learning about the Christmas story and the birth of Jesus.  We will also explore the different reasons that people give gifts at this time of year.

Other Events:

It will be Anti-Bullying Week the week beginning 14/11/16. Children will be discussing what bullying is and what they can do if they or others are being bullied.

The week beginning 21/11/16 will be Road Safety Week.  We will be finding out about the risks of the road and what we can do to stay safe as the evenings get darker.

The children will be treated to a Pantomime performance from a visiting theatre company in the afternoon of the 15/12/16.

Our Parent celebration will be on 15/12/16 at 9am (please note the change of time – we have moved it to the morning to avoid a clash with afterschool clubs). We will be performing a variety of rhymes and songs based around our topic and presenting our buildings of Pudding Lane.
