Big thanks to Charlotte for raising the issue of single-use plastics in our kitchen. After a few emails this practice has now been stopped. A suggestion box is on order to make it easier for our amazing pupils to let us know their ideas for making changes for the better!!

YR1 Learning Overview - Summer 1 2018

What are we learning?

This half term our Topic Theme is ‘Splendid Skies’, and our learning in all subjects will be linked to this.

As Geographers we will be looking at weather around the world and instances of extreme weather, we will also be comparing the weather within the U.K and weather in Africa and China.

As Scientists we will be looking at the types of clothing needed during the four seasons and discuss the months of the year and which season they fall into.  We will measure rainfall, wind direction and temperature and complete weather reports using what we have found. We will be looking at our shadows and investigating how they change position throughout the day.

As Artists we will be creating seasonal pictures inspired by Turner using wax and thinking about which colours he used to depict different seasons and why. We will also be creating still life sketches of natural objects which we find on a nature walk in the park.

In addition:

In English we will reading a variety of stories about the weather around the world and writing diary entries and letters. We will focus on creating sentences using the correct punctuation, thinking about how we can add detail to our sentences to make them more interesting and using the suffix ‘-ing’ to write in the past tense.

In Maths we will be covering money, time, shape and solving word problems involving all four operations in different contexts.

In Mandarin we will continue to broaden our vocabulary through songs and games. We will be particularly focussing on learning the Mandarin numbers and being able to count objects in Chinese. We will also continue to learn how to write in Mandarin.

In Philosophy for Children (P4C) we will continue to develop our thinking skills by asking questions and making assumptions. We will be making choices based on our opinions, and respectfully listening to and responding to others.

In Music we will continue to practise the recorder and use different percussion instruments.

In R.E we will be learning about Islam and learn about Muslim beliefs, what Muslims believe about God, how Muslims respect, appreciate and give thanks for the creation and family life.

Key information:

Uniform:  Please ensure your child is in the correct uniform and that all items are labelled with their name.

P.E. Kit: P.E is on Monday and Wednesday, please ensure your child’s kit is brought in on Mondays and it will be returned to you on Wednesdays to wash at home. Please ensure that each item is labelled with your child’s name. Dill Class are to continue coming into school on Monday morning dressed in their PE kit.

As we are now over half way through the year, please check your child’s P.E kit for size and wear and tear as children are growing so quickly and plimsolls may become too small.

Recorder lessons: Children will be doing Music on a Wednesday afternoon, some of these lessons will involve recorder practise so please ensure your child’s recorder is in their bag. If a recorder is lost or damaged, please speak to your class teacher about getting a replacement.

Reading Books and Reading Records: Children read daily in school, please make sure your child’s book and reading record are in their book bags each day. Please read with your child daily and make a short comment in their reading record. Your child will also choose a ‘Reading for pleasure’ book from our reading corner which you can read to them or they may wish to attempt to read themselves. Please ensure that both books are returned to school every day.

Overview of our home learning: Home learning is handed out weekly on a Thursday and should be returned on a Tuesday. If there are any difficulties with home learning, please see your child’s class teacher. Please ensure your child completes their homework with some support if needed, writing themselves instead of someone scribing for them.

Home learning projects will be due on Tuesday 22nd May. Our topic this half term is ‘Splendid skies’. We will be learning about the four seasons and weather within the UK and around the world including extreme weather such as hurricanes and tornadoes. Home Learning Projects can be presented in any way that children choose.  It is a good opportunity to discuss with your child what they have enjoyed learning about over the half term.

Other Events:

Friday 4th May school will be closed due to an Inset day.

Monday 7th May school will be closed due to a bank holiday.

Library visits: Dill class will visit the library on Monday 23rd April and Mint class will visit on Monday 30th April.
