Year 2 Learning Overview - Spring 1 2018
What are we learning?
This half term our Topic Theme is ‘Street Detectives’, and our learning in all subjects will be linked to this.
As Geographers we will be creating maps, plans and routes. We will be creating keys and will start to develop basic fieldwork skills.
As Scientists we will be planting bulbs and monitoring their growth in the winter weather.
As Artists we will be looking at the work of the artist Lowry and using it as inspiration for a project based on our local community and how it has changed over time.
In English we will be looking at Little Red Riding Hood and have fun by modernising it, twisting it and changing it. We will think about what we would like to improve in our local area and write a persuasive letter to our Mayor.
We will be developing our reasoning and problem solving skills by solving problems involving money, volume and time. Additionally, we will be developing our number sense and understanding of calculating with numbers within 100. We will also be learning to find fractions of an amount.
We will continue to broaden our vocabulary through songs and games. We working on a series of lessons linked to nature where we will begin to use adjectives to describe things. We will also continue to learn how to write in Mandarin.
In Philosophy for Children (P4C) we will continue to develop our thinking skills by asking questions and making assumptions. We will be making choices based on our opinions, and respectfully listening to and responding to others.
In Music we will continue to practise the recorder and singing. Please ensure your child brings in their recorder every Tuesday.
In R.E we will be learning about Hinduism.
Uniform: Please ensure your child is in the correct uniform and that all items are labelled with their name.
P.E. Kit: P.E is on Tuesday and Friday for Buttercup Class and Tuesday and Friday for Primrose Class, please ensure your child’s kit is brought in on Monday and it will be returned to you on Friday to wash at home. Please ensure that each item is labelled with your child’s name.
Reading Books and Reading Records: Children read daily in school, please make sure your child’s book and reading record are in their book bags each day. Please read with your child daily and make a short comment in their reading record.
Overview of our home learning: Home learning is handed out weekly on a Thursday and should be returned on a Tuesday. If there are any difficulties with home learning, please see your child’s class teacher.
Home learning projects will be due on Tuesday 6th February. Our topic this half term is ‘Street Detectives’. We will be learning about our local area, discovering the streets of Dulwich and delving into the history of the area. We will be meeting the people who work on Lordship Lane and seeking out historical clues, which tell us about the Dulwich of yesterday. We also encourage your children to think about the area local to them. What characteristics and features does it have?
Our Parent celebration will be on 9th February at 1.30pm. We will be sharing our learning with you as well as the projects from this half term.
