Year 2 Learning Overview - Spring 2 2017

What are we learning?

This half term our Topic Theme is ‘Muck, Mess and Mixtures,’ and our learning in all subjects will be linked to this.

As Scientists, we will be making lots of different mixtures and looking at the properties of each mixture. We will be experimenting with dough, soap and other materials and will continue to use our scientific skills of enquiry, observation and experimentation.

As Artists, Designers and Technologists, we will be inspired by the work of Wassily Kandinsky and evaluating his work. We will also be designing and making food and evaluating how this fits into a healthy lifestyle. We will also be learning how to using decorative techniques such as marbling.

In addition:

In English, we will be using texts by Roald Dahl; such as The Twits, George’s Marvellous Medicine and Revolting Rhymes; as a stimulus for a variety of types of writing, including the responses to what we are reading. We will be writing poems of our own, and using our skills in non-fiction writing to create a recount of our trip.

In Maths, we will be starting to learn about fractions of numbers and linking this to our work on number, in particular, multiplication and division. We will also be continuing our problem solving and carrying on with our Maths Challenges.

In Mandarin, we will continue to broaden our vocabulary through songs and games. We will be especially focusing on words that enable us to talk about ourselves. We will also continue to learn how to write in Mandarin.

In Philosophy for Children (P4C), we will continue to develop our thinking skills by asking questions and making assumptions. We will be making choices based on our opinions, and respectfully listening to and responding to others.

In Music, we will continue to practise the recorder and develop our musical skills using percussion instruments. Please ensure your child brings in their recorder every Wednesday.

In RE, we will be learning about Christianity. We will be visiting a local church and will be learning about what the different features are for, as well as learning about Easter.

Other Events:

Word Book Day is on Thursday 2nd March, children can come in dressed as their favourite book character, and if they have a copy of the book, they can bring that in too.

We will be going on a school visit to The Tate Modern on the Friday 17th March. More details to follow.

Our Parent celebration will be on Thursday 30th March at 3:30pm. We will be sharing our learning with you as well as the projects from this half term.
