Year 1 Learning Overview - Spring 2 2017

What are we learning?

This half term our Topic Theme is ‘Moon Zoom’, and our learning in all subjects will be linked to this.

As Geographers we will be looking at physical features on Earth and trying to spot similar features on other planets using Google Earth and images captured using the Mars Rover.

As Scientists we will be grouping a range of materials according to their properties, describing the physical properties of the materials and distinguishing between the material and the name of the object.

As Artists we will be learning to use different types of brushes to make different marks, and creating sculptures using natural and man-made materials.

In addition:

In English we will reading a variety of stories about space and aliens, these are Beegu, Sydney Stella and the Moon and Bob Man on the Moon. We will use adjectives and conjunctions (when, if, that, because, or and but) to expand our sentences. We will also be looking at grammatical patterns and learning about different sentence types: statements, exclamations, questions and commands.

In Maths we will be covering multiplication, division, fractions, volume and capacity.

In Mandarin we will be learning to speak about different family members and then move onto talking about our likes and dislikes.

In Philosophy for Children (P4C) we will continue to develop our thinking skills by asking questions and making assumptions. We will be making choices based on our opinions, and respectfully listening to and responding to others.

In Music we will continue to practise the recorder and use different percussion instruments.

In R.E we will be learning about Christianity and focusing on the celebration of Easter.

Other Events:

Word Book Day is on Thursday 2nd March, children can come in dressed as their favourite book character, and if they have a copy of the book, they can bring that in too.

We will be going on a school visit to The Science Museum on the Friday 10th March. More details to follow.

Our Parent celebration will be on Friday 31st March at 9:30am. We will be sharing our learning with you as well as the projects from this half term.

Key information:

Uniform:  Please ensure your child is in the correct uniform and that all items are labelled with their name.

P.E. Kit: P.E is on Tuesday and Thursday, please ensure your child’s kit is brought in on Mondays and it will be returned to you on Thursdays to wash at home. Please ensure that each item is labelled with your child’s name.

Recorder lessons: Children will be having recorder lessons on a Thursday afternoon, please ensure that your child has their recorders every Thursday. If a recorder is lost or damaged please speak to your class teacher about getting a replacement.

Reading Books and Reading Records: Children read daily in school, please make sure your child’s book and reading record are in their book bags each day. Please read with your child daily and make a short comment in their reading record. Your child will also choose a ‘Reading for pleasure’ book from our reading corner which you can read to them or they may wish to attempt to read themselves. Please ensure that both books are returned to school every day.

Overview of our home learning: Home learning is handed out weekly on a Thursday and should be returned on a Tuesday. If there are any difficulties with home learning, please see your child’s class teacher.

Home learning projects will be due on Tuesday 28th March. Our topic this half term is ‘Moon Zoom’. We will be learning about space and materials. Home Learning Projects can be presented in any way that children choose.  It is a good opportunity to discuss with your child what they have enjoyed learning about over the half term.
