Year 1 Learning Overview - Autumn 2 2017

What are we learning?

This half term our Topic Theme is ‘Bright Lights, Big City’, and our learning in all subjects will be linked to this.

As Historians we will learning about the Great Fire of London, we will be sequencing events, looking at maps of where it started and discussing how it started. We will be taking part in a specialised workshop by a theatre company where children will learn to remember the key events of the story through dance and role-play.

As Scientists we will be looking at different types of materials, thinking about the best ones to use to make a house and why. We will also be exploring leaves by drawing, describing and labelling the parts of them.

As Artists we will be recreating Pudding Lane using a variety of materials and building Tudor style houses and shops.

As Geographers we will be learning the four countries which make up the United Kingdom and labelling these on a map. We will also be comparing London as a city to a city in another country, thinking about how they are different and if they have any similarities.

In addition:

In English we will be writing captions to match photographs and writing a recount of our visit with the Queen. We will be re-telling the story of the Great fire of London and writing fact pages. We will also be writing instructions on how to bake bread as Thomas Farriner’s bakery assistant.

In Maths we will be looking at position and direction, using numbers up to 20, sequencing events in chronological order, and learning the days of the week and months of the year.

In Mandarin we will be learning family names. We will also be learning a song in Mandarin to sing at our Christmas carol concert.

In Philosophy for Children (P4C) we will continue to develop our thinking skills by asking questions and making assumptions. We will be making choices based on our opinions, and respectfully listening to and responding to others. Additionally, we will be making Fire Safety posters, thinking about how to keep safe near fire and which rules we should follow so we do not get hurt.

In Music we will continue to practise the recorder and learn a variety of Christmas songs for our Christmas carol concert.

In R.E we will be learning about the Christmas story and the birth of Jesus.  We will also explore the different reasons that people give gifts at this time of year.
